Kia ora and welcome to the website of the New Zealand Chiropractic Board

PLEASE NOTE - SEPTEMBER 2010 REGISTRATION EXAMINATION

The Board has received its full quota of applications for the September 2010 Registration Examination.  Applications for this Examination are now closed.  The next Examination is scheduled for February 2011.

The New Zealand Chiropractic Board is the regulatory authority established by the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003) . The principal purpose of this Act is to protect the health and safety of members of the public by providing for mechanisms to ensure that health practitioners are competent and fit to practise their professions.

The title of Chiropractor is protected by the Act.  Only practitioners that are registered with the Chiropractic Board may use the title Chiropractor and only Chiropractors that hold a current Annual Practising Certificate may lawfully practice chiropractic in New Zealand.

The Chiropractic Board has designed this site as a resource for:

  • chiropractors currently practising in New Zealand;
  • chiropractors wanting to practise in New Zealand;
  • members of the public who use, or wish to use, chiropractic services;
  • persons who need to make a complaint against a chiropractor.

Consultation

The Board has commenced the scheduled review of its Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice document.  A copy of this document is downloadable by clicking here.

The Board invites all interested stakeholders to submit a first round of comments by 1st September 2010.  A further draft will be circulated for consultation once all first round comments are received and considered.

Disciplinary Action

The Board recently referred several complaints to the Health and Disability Commissioner regarding the professional conduct of one of its registrants.  This case involved:
  • inadequate assessment and documentation.
  • recommending a radiograph without supporting clinical reasons.
  • misrepresenting the seriousness of each patient's condition and associated radiograph findings.
  • recommending that each patient enter into a prolonged course of treatment which was not supported by clinical findings and/or failure to give sufficient information about that course of treatment.
  • recommending that each patient enter into a prolonged treatment scheme contrary to the New Zealand Chiropractic Board's Code of Ethics.
  • placing undue pressure on each patient to continue with the treatment and to pay for it.

After investigation, the matter was referred to the Director of Proceedings who laid charges with the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal for prosecution.  The case was heard last month and a copy of the decision and penalty is available below.
