The Ministry of Health is responsible for organising the appointment of Board members. This includes the seeking of nominations from a variety of sources. People may also self nominate. The Minister appoints Board members from the nominations submitted to him/her through the Ministry of Health. The Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 specifies the mix of chiropractors and lay members on the Board. As well as the legislatively determined composition, efforts are made to have within the collective of the Board a wide variety of experience in the practice of chiropractic and other skills useful to the Board as a body corporate eg legal and business experience. The Board operates on the collective responsibility principle. Board members may have been nominated by an organisation, but in no way do they represent the nominating bodies at Board meetings. Board members are paid for their time carrying out Board work. Board members often spend 10-15 days per year on Board/Committee work. Board members set their payment rates.
